  • Brooklyn vs. Northampton: READ HERE

    09. 30. 2008 16:11

LordKelvin
So, it recently occurred to me, why is there not already a thread like this here, given how
frequently this question is asked? Well, despite all the explanations that have been given
over the years, not many have been sticky-worthy, so I guess I'll pick up the stick and write
a sticky-worthy post explaining the differences between the two lines, and the ships
themselves. And hell, might as well go for holding the record for most stickies, right?

Now, while most people who do bother to search can just look at either of my two stickies
for much more detailed information, most people don't seem to bother to do so, so I may as
well put this up for people to read. It may as well cut down on the headaches that we get
in the future.

As always, stuff in the below posts in case I need to modify something.

it all depends on what ship route you wanna go the portland/neworleans can either
go CV or BB route while the brooklyn route goes to a BB only and you get no chance
to get a CV but the brooklyn, cleveland and baltimore are good ships when they
have the proper guns/sailors on it

No way. You're forgetting that you'll be balanced against other CA's in the NH, while
you'll be balanced against other CL's in the Brook. In terms of comparative advantage,
Brook is therefore far superior. Even on absolute terms, the addition of Mark 15 torps to
the Brook makes it more damaging overall in most games, given that you can scout to
identify optimum placement. Why would you compare the two ships based solely on guns and
health?

As I said before, NH is just a stepping stone to carrier; otherwise, you may as well go
Brook / Balti.

people arent honestly comparing the two ships as opposed to the ship LINES are they lol?

The northhampton straight up is a FAR better ship than brook, way better hitting power and
range, and displacement

I've used both. Brook is in my opinion clearly superior, since while you can't load 8 inch
guns, that's made up for by the fact it's a CL rather than CA, is significantly faster,
and actually has usable torp tubes / secondary gun slots. You will easily win more games
with Brook, properly used, the NH is really just a second-rate Baltimore that you can get
at an earlier level (but won't have gunners high enough to take advantage of).

My vote - Brook all the way unless you really love 8's and don't want to wait another 10
levels, or unless you're going CV (this was my only reason for using NH). If you -must-
use NH, load 3 pilots in the support slots so you can at least scout the enemy side for
your team.

As an owner of both the Northampton and Brooklyn class vessels, I prefer Brooklyn
over the Northampton unless I wish to use a carrier. Either way, I would have either.

@ McGib

Your issue is that you don't have enough experts. No matter how high your level
gets, if you don't have enough experts (and preferably some vets) on your sailors,
you'll always be slow and weak and have lousy spread.

Buy your Atlanta back; sell your Brooklyn for the time being, if you have to.

Set up the Atlanta with all 5"/38 Mk 38 L. Go run the AA mission continuously for as
long as you can stand, to gain experts. Yes, it's extremely boring, but if you can't
pay to buy experts, this is the only way your sailors will get better.

Okay so I have my brooklyn now and I'm using the 6"47 Mk16L's as recommended
however my spread is more like a shotgun. I'm lucky if I hit a DD size ship with 3
shells. My Gunners are 40th lvl and I dont have the coin to buff them in anyway.
Would it be logical therefore to change to a lower level 6" gun?
