  • yuno's April Update

    04. 17. 2009 17:51

Dear Brothers and Sisters (huh? Do we have any?) of Navy Field,

I hope all of our family is doing well. I guess it…s a bit early for my updates since I
normally try to update the news towards the end of the month. Recent events have
left me with no choice but to give some explanation regarding the drama in NF.

1. The NF Drama Season 2
Here it comes again; I guess we have an annual drama once every year. It always
seems to stem from players who guess and speculate about things without knowing
any details. Therefore, here I am with my story again. Obst and Gruven have left
ONF as you all know. However, it…s not as a result of us having kicked them out or
us making them leave. First, they have been very busy with their personal lives.
Second, as you all know, the new ONF patch progress has been going very slow
from Korea as that dev team is lagging on their work. I am really sorry about this.
Also, the "Big Thing" that Gurven talked about is raising the "Level Cap" in the
game. As you may know, ours is different compared to the Korea server. We have
level caps for sailors. Basically, because of this cap, level 95 and level 120 sailors are
no different except higher level sailors can have bigger ships. Therefore, I have
decided to raise this cap for the veteran players and discussed it with Gruven, but
he obviously did not like it. I believe that this may be the main reason he left the
team. I feel really bad for losing both Obst and Gruven since they have done an
incredible job, but since ONF is based on volunteer work, I am respecting their
decisions. I really appreciate their work done for the community. Thank you, Obst
and Gruven.

This is the story between us and ONF head players; there is not a conspiracy or
anything of the sort. It's just that we have different views and ideas plain and
simple.

2. Raising the Cap Plan
As I mentioned above, we are going to test out the new ability cap. We are
definitely not removing the "Ability Cap" Just trying to fix it. The plan is to change
them very slowly and little by little. So, we may start with a 5% increase in the test
server to be tested by testers and then will apply it to the normal server to see how
you like it. If you do not like it then we can just take it out. Isn't this simple? So
let's just try it out to see how you guys like it.

3. ONF
Since ONF heads, Obst and Gruven, have left the team, I guess we have to form the
team again. We will discuss this with members of TNF and will let you know further
details once available. Also, please remember that recent ONF work will be patched
to our server whenever they are ready. I will try to push to have it done soon.
Thank you for your patience on this.

4. About My Regular Update
Some people seem to be misunderstanding my updates that I keep providing in
order to give you ideas into what we are doing and planning now and into the
future. These are ideas and goals of ours and not exact predictions. I keep seeing
players calling me a "lair", a "fake", or that I "never keep promises" among other
flames concerning the delaying of projects. If I were the one who did all of the work
on the game, then I could give you an exact date for everything we do. I am not a
developer though and do not even know what C++ looks like. I am just checking
with our developers and getting the progress reports and then updating on my
update. I believe we have some programmers playing; if you are one then you
should understand how it…s not easy to work on a project. It just does not work as
expected; there are always problems and unexpected happenings. This is why I
cannot give you the exact dates even if it…s something which has been patched into
the test server. So, I will leave the decision up to you guys; I will let you guys chose
to either have me stop providing my normal updates and to not reveal any plans
that we're working on until they are ready to patch (this would be much easier for
me), or for me to continue providing the sorts of updates which I've provided in the
past with no promises on exact dates. Let me know what you think.

5. Patch between Korea and NFNA server.
The other thing I kept hearing were comments about patch delays from Korea to
NFNA server. Those who allege that we are ignoring NFNA make me laugh. Why
would we ignore NFNA which has the most NF players? Stop making drama please.
The reason we are patching something in the Korea server first is because it's a lot
faster to recover the problem there and we have a different balance system (There
is no ability cap in the Korea server). For example, last week new anti-sub weapons
were patched to the Korea server and there were errors, so they had to take the
server down in order to fix the problem. If we patch them on NFNA at the same time,
it would take double the amount of time to fix the problem and we would probably
(definitely) still get flames from players like "This is how $D works, I knew it! They
suck" So basically, given the choice of being flamed in either situation I would
rather take flames for having to delay the patch in NFNA.

6. Storage System Update
Almost Done! :) Our dev team is currently testing it out and fixing some bugs.
Planning to patch them in Korea server first within two weeks and if no problem is
detected then we will patch them to the NFNA server as soon as possible. I would
place bets on it arriving here no later than next month. Thank you very much for
your patience!

7. About our trade system
One of the most common comments I receive from players is about sailor trading.
Currently, Premium sailors and elite sailors are blocked for trading. Players are
telling us: "You're evil $DE! Why can't I trade something which I've paid for! You
swindling money guzzlers!" I feel kind of bad about it. I am curious to see how
many people really want to trade all sailors, except BO. I am not saying we are
going to unblock the sailor trade locks, but let me just see how many of you would
want this to happen first.

8. Premium CVs
Most likely, many players have already seen this. I'm sorry, it was supposed to be
on my last update but I just forgot to include it. It's a bit late, but please enjoy:

Hindenburg

Ticonderoga

Implacable

Zuikaku

9. New Ships for New Nation Project
Here are more photos for our new nations (I like Bolzano Personally; it looks really
nice.)

BB Richelieu

CA Bolzano

CA Trento

10. SDE vs Blizzard?
I see lots of players making comparisons between us and Blizzard. It's funny
because it's somewhere along the lines of comparing a Hyundai Sonata vs a Rolls
Royce Phantom (I'm not trying to be disrespectful towards my company nor our
country's car company here). Personally, Blizzard is my most admired company. I
love their games including Diablo, Starcraft, and World of Warcraft. In addition,
World of Warcraft is the best game in my gaming life. Every time I play it, I am taken
aback and often say "wow" to myself. I've learned many things from playing it. It's
just such a well-made game. I apologize; we are not Blizzard. I believe Blizzard had
a hard time when they started their first project and also that they made lots of
mistakes until they were able to really succeed. Navy Field is our first project and we
are making lots of mistake and we might not look professional to you. I am sorry for
these problems we have caused you, but please understand that even if we cannot
be as good as Blizzard, we are working as hard as them to provide you a better
game experience; this I can promise.

BTW: Does anyone know the exact launch date of Diablo 3?

As always, thank you all for your support of Navy Field,

-yuno

Very Impressive, very impressive indeed.

The Ability Cap thing, I wont go into that. I don't know enough to speak of it.

I want your regular update. Otherwise, I'm left in the dark, and I hate not knowing
things. >.<

I find it acceptable to give NFKR things first. That way you can use THEM as guinea pigs,
not us.

WOO!!!!! Now I need to make a storage account, and get rid of all this extra KM stuff I
have left over. -.-

It would be awesome if we could trade elites. I mean...it would be awesome for the
community. Ain't no one getting any of MY elites.

YAY! Premium Ships that I don't even use!!!! Ticonderoga and Zuikaku look boring. =/

WOOOOOOOO NEW NATION SHIPS! However, still no Russian Ships, so I don't give a damn about
them. :D

Its obvious SDE is a smaller company than Blizzard, and theres no way to compete with a
company like Blizzard when you're still so damn small.

There is an upside to higher caps... You may originally get 20k exp for sinking a
Montana with 900SD, with say... 1350SD (assuming the increases will go to 50%),
you will get 30k exp for it... So each battle you do, would mean more exp, thus
faster grinding since you would be able to increase your productivity per battle...

As much as I understand the arguments of people that don't want caps to disappear, Yuno is
talking about small changes and small percentages. Let's just see how this works out first.

i for one appreciate the way sde is going about things . selling of premium sailors
will remove the economics of the server in a big way . so as much as i want to the
answer is no .

You can keep all this crap all I wanted was the BB5 patch which I have now given up
on, well I'm not waiting any longer anyway. Nearly 2 years ffs!

some things are just logically stupid in navyfield, and i think that raising the caps
would just fix them (some other little fixes are needed also).
-reload and accuracy caps can be reached at lvls 70-80 (this is less then the quarter
of max exp if im right) and there is no difference between accuracy and reload
gunners then. logically reload gunners should never be able to have a spread as
good as accuracy gunners and accuracy gunners should never be able to get the
same reload as the reload gunners...even if its a difference between a very tight
spread and a tight spread, but it should be some. also blockshot should only be
availiable to accuracy gunners.
- everybody reaches SD cap till lvl 90-100 (RN even faster, this is less then the half
exp to 120 if im not mistaken, and this is WITHOUT using a restorer) this is even
more stupid, SD cap should be reached only with restorer, i wonder why there still is
a restorer.
- not to mention reload gunners for AA, but i understand that ONF is allready
working on this issue.

bottom line: i think everybody did at least few major mistakes when they started
playing the game and this is mainly because of the inchoerence of the game itself. i
think raising the caps would just help the game to be more logically consistent. and i
dont see why everybody should have all caps, i think beeing able to reach only some
of the caps would make the game a lot more intresting, like having to use a restorer
to reach SD but then not beeing able to reach speed because the lack of engie. ppl
would have more choises then, not only one, so they will be forced to develop new
styles of playing.
-in the end you can just let everyone reclass all their sailors so they would have no
reason to complain about the changes.

i love navyfield and all, mainly because it needs a lot of skills and because you can
go in, play a game or 2 then get back to work, but comparing SDE with blizzard it's
completly legit in my oppinion. rolls royce phantom costs roughly 10 times more then
hyundai sonata - NF on the other hand costs more then WoW (or starcraft, or
diablo) if you want to play it decently, beeing 10 times less complex then WoW. you
shouldn't think im a WoW fan, cause im not, i never liked it, and i agree to pay more
for a better ideea (like NF), but i expect the game to be up to standards as it costs
more beeing less complex (easier to be managed by a small company)

L1 / L2 without repair cap = good bye NF

"Therefore, I have decided to raise this cap for the veteran players and discussed it with
Gruven, but he obviously did not like it."

Maybe because that would destroy their whole work, since this would destroy the whole balance
they tried to give to us imo.
Raising the SD cap - oh yeah make ships which already are hard to take out even more
"indestructible"
Raising the RLD cap - BB guns which shoot even faster ? I think its fine as it is ?
Repair Cap - its already to hard to reach theres only one nation who could profit from it UK
Overheat Time - is there a cap?
Accuracy Cap - the only cap i can think of which could be raised a bit, but really not much

So my personal opinion about this, I dont want to see this happen.

Thank you for this Update and for the information contained therein.

________________________________________________
1) A statment that I regret wasn't made by those directly involved. Strangely, the
statement that was made by Gruvn however suggests another, darker side to it, not that I
want to rate either of these two statements any further.
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
2) It sounds promising- however just raising the caps altogether will not change much at
high levels. A gradual, level-based raising of the cap would be better. But perhaps that's
what this is about? Which sailors are we talking about and what about balance, btw.?
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
3) Implementation was the issue since ONF1 and remains the key problem.
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
4) I see where you are comming from and I can imagine how you must feel at times when
reading all of those unfounded comments. I am certainly sorry about that.
Misunderstandings are however often the result of when one spreads informed rumours rather
than certain facts. Misunderstandings are thus hardly avoidable - also when one takes into
consideration how a number of the topics turned out very different from how they were
presented over a consistent period of time. Quite a few people will find it hard to
differenciate between what is etheric and what is palpable when changes come to terms.
Words such as "there might" or "we are trying to do xyz" or perhaps "we will test this and
tell you how it goes" are much (!) more suitable than "we are working on this" and "there
will be".

When going through your previous updates one can find plenty of issues with the wording
used. It must therefor be stated that in a fair number of cases the misunderstandings were
programmed.

Chosing propper words is highly important. Fostering dreams and then not getting there
frustrates a lot of people. Not knowing what is going on and then being presented with a
catalogue of changes also frustrates them. Hence I am personaly not really happy about
your black and white offer to either ask you to continue with your updates or to have no
updates at all. Such'd be nigh to dictatorial a statement which is not very like you at
all. One needs to find a middle way in order to make it work - at least that's the way
people tick over here.

This having been noted, I'd like to suggest that it is not your updates per se that cause
the anger when things don't work as intended. What angers people is often the very
diverging content (from one update to the other) combined with the inconsistent and
lacking (!) frequency of any sort of update. You yourself call your writings "regular
updates". They have neither appeared at a "regular" basis nor have they always included
useful "updates" but more of a mix of factual information next to mere ideas and intended
plans.

We know you are volunteered to write them up. That is all very fine and we thank you for
it. However there is a community behind this game and the community enjoys getting an
informative update on a regular basis. Give them info when there is info and give them
entertainment when there is something entertaining and make everyone aware which is which.
Other places get regular Developer Blogs... here one somethimes gets a weekly patch and/or
a monthly info update... or sometimes neither patch nor information for several months.
And when the new info arrives it differs diametricaly from what was given before.

I conclude: As said above, anger and misunderstandings were programmed to ocurr and
suggest that communication between the developers and the community should and could well
be improved.
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
5) I'd also be laughing were there not a tiny little thing to it. Namely that people
complaining are ignorant.

This derives, in part, from their own selves... yet partly due to the lacking downward
communication by parts of the developers. A Developers' Blog that informs the global
community with up-to-date information could easily solve this (yes, I am aware the idea of
finding a "solution" to everything is a Western thing). Nevermind when one server gets
patched but keep in mind you have a global community and not a regional one. People
elsewhere would also like to know whats going on and all they can do is to grab an
auto-translator go and pick up on leacked rumours and then filter the resulting gibberish.
I ask you: Why are you surprised people are ignorant and follow silly rumours when the
current company policy does nothing at all to avoid such issues?
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
6) Very nice! Short, clear cut and down to the point.
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
7) I don't mind either way. My crew stands and is fully capped plus I already left too
many dollars at the till to consider buying myself new sailors... not even mentioning the
grind from zero to hero all over again'd kill me. So I guess liberalizing trade can only
be fruitful. Wouldn't even mind trading in BOs once one reaches a certain level, tbh.
________________________________________________

________________________________________________
8) Thank you for including these. We have seen them before. And that's exactly what I
meant with what I wrote above about how peoples' ignorance and confusion derives from
having to pick up leaked half-information in other languages and this again often leading
to anger when there is at the same time a consistent lack of even the slightest info given
out by SDE/TNF via "regular updates" that actualy are regular and do contain updates. But
we are certainly not going to ripp your head off for forgetting them last time... the
American and Japanese ones look too dull, btw. VERY much so.

9) ... as these new cuties are worth a look. Thank you for sharing these with us.
Especialy nice to see that the Italian ships are also on the way and looking great. Also
interesting to see how a French BB can look its best ; )
