Despite the amusing post above, I think that the grids do provide an advantage. In the real army world, grids are only used for something precise, like artillery or when you have time to look at a map. In combat, in general, cardinal directions are used (in this game it would be the equivilent to just saying "upper right corner" or "south border". Adding that grid system would make it easier and more readily usable. Also, if you were really high speed (with your fleets never happen in GB) you could start giving both distance and direction for some real team work.
The numbers without a map reference just lead to people saying stupid things or request without saying where. Of course, there will be stupid people. My favorite of course is when I get "Flag".... nothing else, just "Flag". A fix might cut down on that a bit.
Also, in case no one noticed, the current system is backwards. The military grid system and the geographic map system (lattitude and longitude) has the numbers INCREASING as they go north on the map. NF map tends to be confusing as people naturually thing numbers should go up as the look at the map, not down....
