Never let the subs get inside your torpedo exploding range. If they stay on the edge of it, the damage your topedoes do will kill them even with splash damage. That's why with the SS2 and SS3 I run away from them and kill them with the aft torpedoes -- it keeps the enemy away. The sonarman is critical in SS fights. Whoever sees first usually gets the first shot.
BTW I was playing with 2 engy's, a repair and a seaman on my SS4. My engy's have leveled up some more and I got some experts for them, so I felt like the Seaman was no longer needed. I replaced him with a restorer (I know -- GASP -- why not another engy or repair -- I don't have them...) I am really liking the restorer. At this point, my SD is at least 50 points higher (I am running 640 with a crew from mid 70s to high 80s).
I still think SD is more important than repair for a sub. If you get hit, you go under for repair, but as soon as you go down below a certain level, your speed and underwater time is too short to survive. Maybe if I ever get to SD 900, I could use another engy or repairer, but I don't see this happening anytime soon.
