Some valid points raised there. I will put down my true (and blunt) feelings on the Bismarck.
Bit of an essay....
The Bismarck was, at one time, a ship of magnificence. In the days of BB123, a good Bismarck player could top 100k with ease and keep going until he was finally overpowered by a Nagato or a Vangod. This time has gone.
I leveled up in the BSM when there weren't many 100+ crews, let alone 110+ crews. This meant that I had a chance to do some real damage and use my ships advantages due to the roughly equal crew levels.
This has all changed, shared XP and the fact the servers are older than before means we have a lot of high level players. We ALSO have a lot of high level players who SUCK. I remain resolutely against Shared XP (even though my XP is increased greatly by it), because it doesn't train good players.
In Beta, if you died without getting attack, you did one of two things:
-You improved. -You fucked off.
This was fantastic for the game combined with the lower and wider spread of crew levels. New players would join and become skilled players within a month or two of joining. These days, it is just first to Fictory.
What does all this have to do with the Bismarck though? To use the BSM to its full potential takes the KM skill. I spent weeks-months in CL/CA games running and gunning in my Mpro and it taught me to fight. It taught me to win. It taught me KM.
I can go into a blitzkreig now and watch KM ships with torps, KM CAs with 5.9" tripples. There are precious few players who use range in blitz like they should and MOST of them are actually older players using nations like UK/US. Vets/Elites/Boosts have improved KMs spreads but improved other nation's abilities far better.
Bismarck can be a fantastic ship but you need to be in a lvl 100 capped room with 30+ players. That is how I played it, without the cap but lvl 100+ players were reasonably rare and if they did come in, they got gang banged.
The Bismarck is a relic of Beta. A testament to grinding, to bad spreads, to poor repair rates, to excellent players with 60 vets on their gunners.
That is why the Bismarck cannot be used in NF these days. You can vet it up, but it is still just a ship that requires skill, skill which 80% of the NF community doesn't have. Put it against a lvl 120 SoDak and I know who I put my money on. The Andrea Doria overcomes the problems of the BSM.
The BSM got over its large size before because it had range. Range means little these days when even lvl 90 crews can have uber repair rates and even uberer speed/OH Time.
AD is smaller, faster in many cases, harder hitting, easier to aim with, better spread and has a better turning circle.
The Bismarck is gone, lost to the ages of Beta and early retail until you get a level 100-110+ (depending on how good you are) crew. At that level, the BSM is just about good enough to compete in BB123 again.
