  • New Ship line: The ASW ships

Now, the French Nation. Actually, yes I can see more people joining and returning for the
French nation, thats obvious. I mean, this is a BIG deal, its been a request for many many
years to have more nations then the first 4. So I can see people returning to play the French.

SS4's. This is NOT a reason for people to return, and I am saying this as an SS driver,
not just a whiner. SS's have some serious unaddressed problems in game. Lack of ASW ships
just add to this. Its not like we don't have the weapons to sink subs, we do with Depth
charges and Hedgehogs, but no one plays them because we cannot fit big fat high level
sailors on DD's, the displacement is simply too low.

Rather then adding SS4's and pissing people off more, create yet another shipline
dedicated to ASW DE's and DD's, and maybe even a CL or two.

Start of at Level 12-30 with several corvettes. 30-50 with DE's (Destroyer Escorts). Level
50-75 with DD's. Level 75-120 with CL's

Yes, this seems like a WEIRD shiptree. but let me explain in more detail. These ships will
not simply be the regular DD's we have now. They will be special.

They will have depth charge racks mounted on the stern, corvettes will have a single gun
mount on the bow. Giving you the option to either mount a gun, or a hedgehog. Two depth
charge racks on the stern. using the remodel feature, you can add space to the gun mount,
and eventually add a stern gun (while still keeping depth charges on the rear). There will
be two stern depth charge racks, each one operated by 1 sailor, so two sailors total to
operate depth charges.

DE's, or destroyer escorts. These were small ships build during WWII that were built to
escort convoy's and hunt and KILL subs. They typically had a very light armorment, depth
charges, and hedgehogs.

DE's should be fitted with two stern depth charge racks (both operated by a single sailor)
and a total of 2 depth charge launchers, one on each side. these new weapons launch depth
charges about 50-100 feet to either side of the ship, and will be operated by the second
sailor used on depth charges on Corvettes. They will have a total of 3-4 guns, 2 on the
bow, one stern. These could double for hedgehogs. Remodels will increase the guns space,
allowing larger guns and/or more ammo

DD's (reinvented, or RDD's for short). These would be more heavily armored. But they pose
a slight problem, how to arange the armorment? I propose two depth charge racks on the
stern, and a total of 4 launchers on the sides, combined, that accounts for two sailors. A
total of 4 Gun slots will be offered, which can fit dual guns, (DP Guns) of about a 5"
caliber. These slots will double for Hedgehogs.

CL's (reinvented, or RCL's). These will be the ultimate baddass ASW ship. They will mount
a total of 2 depth charge racks on the stern, and 6 (yes 6) launchers on the side,
operated by a single sailor. The second sailor will be on the bow, and manning 2 hedgehog
launchers (one on each side of the ship). They will have 4+ gun mounts, mounting guns up
to dual 6" or greater. remodels of these ships will increase the number of guns, the
number of depth charge launchers on the stern, add a third depth charge rack in the middle
of the stern, and increase space for hedgehogs.

After a player reaches level 120, he will be able to choose between the BB6 or the CV6
(having dedicated all his time to killing subs, its only logical that he can choose)

These ships will add yet another line to NF, all the ships should be generic, and the tree
can be the same for all nations (with the only difference being guns), and once and for
all bring balance to subs. The only reason subs are NOT balanced in NF is because there is
no one hunting them. BBs carry hedgehogs, but that makes the BB's vulnerable to carriers.
Dedicated ASW ships is the only way to balance subs. EXP and credit gain should be fair.
And Displacement should be larger to fit heavy crews. This is why no one runs ASW ships,
because when the crews level up, they get heavier, and eventually cannot fit on DD's and
CL's anymore.

yes, ASW exp boosts, bonuses for hitting the subs with non-gunfire weapons. good
idea.

Greetings,

Yes there should be a universal retrofit for all DDs and CLs nation specific that would
convert the ship into an ASW Escort. Basically nothing should change on the ship
except for the retrofit to armaments. I play an FF ASW an just one drop of my depth
charges normally sinks enemy SS. I only carry a total of 10 d/c and I never run out
because I am so skilled at commanding my ship I dont waste ammo or make
mistakes.

DDs and CLs literally lack the ability to have main guns, hedge hogs, torps, and
depth charges all at the same time. My FF has all that and it not only sinks SS, it
sinks BATTLE SHIPS, and it contantly sinks CVs. The reason DDs and CLs are not
true ASW ships is because they have a larger profile and lack the speed to dodge
and evade enemy fire while countering SS threat on frontlines. This is a fact even if
some of you are lucky in DD and CL.

There should be an exp boast or bounty of 15% exp for any SS destroyed with
depth charges, Hedge Hodges, or torpedo bombers. I don't know how NF could
implement this, but there needs to be a bonus reward for sinking an enemy SS.

Great Battles and Great Battles 2 need to require that there be a minimum of 2 FF,
CL, and DD combinations for every one SS in a battle. I know this would be a pain
at first, maybe even reduce max number of SS in battle to 8 therefore requiring a
minimum of 2 x 8 = 16 FF+DD+CL. Without changing anything with a max of 10 SS
would require 20 of the FF+DD+CL. NF would have to institute a minimum not a
maximum for this ship type. I dont think they have ever done this before.

Done Deal... fix it!

People miss the fact that APAs make great AA ships.
many people have allready configured some ships to be effective as ASW. As
such .... I dont see a need for a ASW or AA ship tree.
In real life ......... BBs could not go as fast as the CVs and with the rule of a fleet
being the speed of the slowest ship ..... BBs were a fleet of their own ..... with
support. This is also why only Cls and DDs escorted the US CVs at the start of WWII.
( other then BBs were sunk ) The need was for fast moving ships that could keep up
with the CV. some CL classes had more AA guns then secondary guns.

NF gives us remodels of ships ......... maybe instead of a ASW tree ..... have a
remodel for ASW. .... Or do you want to be more like a " Liberty Ship " ...... possible
remodel of an APA.

z99 with depth charges only, and hope to god you got a good engie. i've seen on
travelling at 80 knots or so (like a damn cruise missle or something man it was so
fast) he dropped the charges and was clear of them before they went off :)

i've heard the ff-x is a fast boat as well.

Altsien still asking to buff subs??????

Anyway this is a great idea, but i would preffer it if there was an ASW event ship for
each nation, like the Event CL's for each nation, rather than a whole new shipline

That's why you use the Somers. I can somehow always escape self-damage using it.
Maybe it's just a special property :D.

if you look at the Fletcher Class armament on its Wiki page it will show that the Fletcher
class had along with its 2 x5 torp launchers it had 6 K guns(HH) and 2 DC racks

I like that idea Adjutant.

I did some testing over the last few days. I loaded up a Fletcher with a pretty much at
level crew. Level 26 gunners, level 14 BO, and arm sailors.

I fitted it with depth charges and entered some GB's. Using the depth charges against
nothing when the games started, I practiced launching the charged, and then using overheat
to get away from them. This is with no armor by the way.

What I found is that no matter what, I could not get enough distance between me and the
charges to prevent self inflicted damage. No matter what combo I tried. Hitting overheat
then launching the charges did not work either. When actually fighting subs, I did more
damage to myself then I did to the subs.

I will try an FFY and FFX now, to see if I can get their depth charges to work without
killing myself first.

But what has become very clear is the need for stern mounted depth charges and perhaps
reducing the splash damage to prevent self inflicted damage.

Well, if you think about it, an FF is really just a smaller DD. So maybe a DE could be
counted as a DD instead? They'd still carry guns against surfaced subs, but the
added extra T-slots would kinda propel them into the DD range. Of course, I'd love
to see some BBs with enough shell space to carry reloads for DCs :D.
