  • New Ship line: The ASW ships

Now, the French Nation. Actually, yes I can see more people joining and returning for the
French nation, thats obvious. I mean, this is a BIG deal, its been a request for many many
years to have more nations then the first 4. So I can see people returning to play the French.

SS4's. This is NOT a reason for people to return, and I am saying this as an SS driver,
not just a whiner. SS's have some serious unaddressed problems in game. Lack of ASW ships
just add to this. Its not like we don't have the weapons to sink subs, we do with Depth
charges and Hedgehogs, but no one plays them because we cannot fit big fat high level
sailors on DD's, the displacement is simply too low.

Rather then adding SS4's and pissing people off more, create yet another shipline
dedicated to ASW DE's and DD's, and maybe even a CL or two.

Start of at Level 12-30 with several corvettes. 30-50 with DE's (Destroyer Escorts). Level
50-75 with DD's. Level 75-120 with CL's

Yes, this seems like a WEIRD shiptree. but let me explain in more detail. These ships will
not simply be the regular DD's we have now. They will be special.

They will have depth charge racks mounted on the stern, corvettes will have a single gun
mount on the bow. Giving you the option to either mount a gun, or a hedgehog. Two depth
charge racks on the stern. using the remodel feature, you can add space to the gun mount,
and eventually add a stern gun (while still keeping depth charges on the rear). There will
be two stern depth charge racks, each one operated by 1 sailor, so two sailors total to
operate depth charges.

DE's, or destroyer escorts. These were small ships build during WWII that were built to
escort convoy's and hunt and KILL subs. They typically had a very light armorment, depth
charges, and hedgehogs.

DE's should be fitted with two stern depth charge racks (both operated by a single sailor)
and a total of 2 depth charge launchers, one on each side. these new weapons launch depth
charges about 50-100 feet to either side of the ship, and will be operated by the second
sailor used on depth charges on Corvettes. They will have a total of 3-4 guns, 2 on the
bow, one stern. These could double for hedgehogs. Remodels will increase the guns space,
allowing larger guns and/or more ammo

DD's (reinvented, or RDD's for short). These would be more heavily armored. But they pose
a slight problem, how to arange the armorment? I propose two depth charge racks on the
stern, and a total of 4 launchers on the sides, combined, that accounts for two sailors. A
total of 4 Gun slots will be offered, which can fit dual guns, (DP Guns) of about a 5"
caliber. These slots will double for Hedgehogs.

CL's (reinvented, or RCL's). These will be the ultimate baddass ASW ship. They will mount
a total of 2 depth charge racks on the stern, and 6 (yes 6) launchers on the side,
operated by a single sailor. The second sailor will be on the bow, and manning 2 hedgehog
launchers (one on each side of the ship). They will have 4+ gun mounts, mounting guns up
to dual 6" or greater. remodels of these ships will increase the number of guns, the
number of depth charge launchers on the stern, add a third depth charge rack in the middle
of the stern, and increase space for hedgehogs.

After a player reaches level 120, he will be able to choose between the BB6 or the CV6
(having dedicated all his time to killing subs, its only logical that he can choose)

These ships will add yet another line to NF, all the ships should be generic, and the tree
can be the same for all nations (with the only difference being guns), and once and for
all bring balance to subs. The only reason subs are NOT balanced in NF is because there is
no one hunting them. BBs carry hedgehogs, but that makes the BB's vulnerable to carriers.
Dedicated ASW ships is the only way to balance subs. EXP and credit gain should be fair.
And Displacement should be larger to fit heavy crews. This is why no one runs ASW ships,
because when the crews level up, they get heavier, and eventually cannot fit on DD's and
CL's anymore.

This is interesting to say the least....but alas I am a natch confused.

Why....make a brand new line for just hunting submarines when ships in game already are
very effective. A Q-Class can drop an SS3 in one shot.

The only nation the can't reallly do much ASW wise is the IJN. Brooklyn, Moltke, Atlanta,
Emden, Emerald, Even Yubari.........

Just mount HH in the main slots, and DC racks in the secondary, and you have a very
powerful ASW weapon.

Omaha or realy any ships with many gun barrels would be great becasue you just set to
gradual fire and learn your HH ranges. Subs die, pretty fast.

I think that subs are a "problem" not so much becasue there is no effective way to counter
them, but more no enough people have dedicated ASW setups.

Try it next game, just hop in a CL or something armed only with HH charge the field and
spary a submarine, most the time (unless he sees you firing) by the time your HH land,
the sub cant surface and it dies.

The other part is I'm really wondering what ships you were planning on using. I do love
new ships.

The only thing I do not like about all this is I had to work around the way guns/sailors
work in NF. In real life, Corvette's and DE's both had hedgehogs, but with regards to the
power of these ships against SS's, the balance of the ships, and the limitations of the NF
engines, I don't see any way to do this properly then what I have

You can't have corvette's and DE's too powerful against SS's, or it would be unfair and
not balanced. If they don't have enough weapons, they will be easily raped. With SS4's
coming out, a new server, this needs attention.

Yes, stern launches solve the self tking issue, that was the idea lol. but without adding
a third weapon slot (in addition to T and R) I cannot see adding hedgehogs to the
Corvette's and DE's. Plus, if you do, they may be too powerful for the SS's and make the
SS's useless.

Corvettes and DE's would both be classed as DD's in NF. RCL's would clearly be CL's. But
Corvettes would carry ingame name of "Corvette" and DE's would be "Destroyer Escort" much
like we have Panzerschiffe's now.

Anyone else have suggestions to help me modify this? I want to make this a better
suggestion, and I clearly have some gray area's that need help

You get my rec for that day for this one.

I enjoy the ASW role as it is a break from the usual line up and shoot at each other
routine of NF. As it stands now I think more people would do ASW if the rewards were
higher. It can be literally hit or miss... you end up downing a sub with DCs and feel all
big and proud. Or you end up just in the wrong place and don't get close enough to a sub
to do any damage.

What I like most about your idea is the rearward launching DCs. This would help eliminate
the biggest issue with using DCs right now, the self-tking. If one could just drive over
the sub and launch and keep going and clear in time that would be great. If I had my
druthers I might tweak your proposal, but it is sound more or less as is.

you bring up good points that I did think of.

as far as CV6/BB6, you can always buy crew....hell, thats what everyone does these days. I
personally can't understand how people manage to come up with hundreds of millions of
credits to do this, I only have about 3M myself, but whatever

And as far as the SS cap, I see what you mean. But remember, these ships also have slots
for guns, so you can fight smaller ships with your guns. At least thats the way I see it.

I am completly open to suggestions, but I think ASW ships need attention more then
releasing the new SS's

Interesting idea, but just a couple of issues... how can someone that has dedicated 120
levels to ASW, switch to CV or BB??... for CV, he won't have the fighters... and for BB I
guess something like AA or Eng would be missing. Second, considering you have a max of 5
subs per game to kill... what will you do after they are gone? an AWS Ship is no match for
a BB, BC, CA.

I like the idea, just those thoughts before I like it completely.
