Those were good times for you I suppose, with the European Cup semi and several league titles won.
I'm not that old actually, but I do enjoy studying clubs' histories and knowing their roots as well as significance to the cities they're based in. I believe that's what football is all about, and not just about who's the best player, most popular etc.
Which brings me to my biggest lament about the modern game.
Gone are the days when a small team could actually win the league title. The Huddersfields, Prestons, Ipswichs and Nottingham Forests. Today, it's all about money.
If something isn't done about this soon, I fear I might never see a club other than the big five win the EPL ever again in my lifetime.
Fans contribute to the vicious cycle. Due to all the hype in the media, new fans naturally pledge allegiance to the big teams, which indirectly contribute to increasing their revenues through merchandising, TV rights, sponsorship, etc. The rich get richer, and the poor remain the same, widening the gap.
Football and the people who follow it nowadays has become very shallow and superficial. It's all about glamour, popularity, fame and joining the bandwagon.
Sure, these fans can tell you who's a good player, what kind of skills they performed, or how well they played in a game. But apart from that, what do they know?
Away from England, probably 8 out of 10 Man Utd fans don't even know about the Munich air disaster, much less that their club started life as Newton Heath.
I fully agree with you. It is indeed a pile of rubbish.
