here's some small basic video's i made about grouping fighters;

http://smg.beta.photobucket.com/user/flaggelant/media/groupingonlift-off.mp4.html

basicly you just keep clicking your sq numbers on the keyboard 123 123 123 123 (if you have 3 pilots with 3 planes per pilot for example) and in between clicking the numbers you also click on the map with your mouse, that way your fighters will move closer to eachother.

When they reach a close formation you "square select" them and you have a combat formation which you can wield with only your mouse
(you'll notice that after engaging they will sometimes break formation, so you will have to start over with grouping after that)

I just use the square select in any situation, makes it much easier than hitting 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234 1234

fighters in a close formation are better at packing a punch than letting them run in one by one.

Having a loose formation has some benefits under certain conditions but yeah

By the time you finish pressing that 123123123 your fighters would be dead.

@TS: Do reverse concave launch.

- Launch inverse in a rapid succession. 3`2`1`

- The first fighters of each squad should automatically be next to each other already. Imagine a semicircle when they spin. Drag the planes in the direction between the center of the semicircle and the last plane. After clicking at the point once, drag away and click at some random point away from the CV. This should AUTOMATICALLY stack your fighters.

This is the same tactic I employ, one of the few techniques I employ with my torpedo bombers (they are grouped immediately in just a few seconds).

grouping with 123 123 123 can easily be done combined with dragging if your not very slow on your computer, so you can group your fighters & drag them out if your camped.
and this also works in mid air, rather than only from lift off.

True, but it would be too much hassle grouping it that way. You have to make sure that the planes 1-2, 2-3, and 1-3 converge properly at one point. Not only that's VERY difficult to achieve if there are fighters everywhere, grouping them would take a lot of space since you have to derive the correct vectors to make them converge.

So if you intend to group planes, do it correctly from the start. Do reverse concave launching.

The reverse concave launch works great and take little time to achieve a tight grouping and should be done with all planes at takeoff. After your formation has been broken the 1-2-3 method does work but takes more time to achieve a tight group. You should practice both methods because they are useful to know. As for tactics in fighting other fighters the first thing to know is that different nations and tier's fight different. As for IJN fighters go, i find it best to use their speed and maneuverability to your advantage, by rapidly changing altitudes and directions. Maneuver your planes in such a way to overtake the enemy from the side. Divide and conquer try to out maneuver the enemy and split up their groups. Better to take on small group one at a time than be chewed up by the whole group.
I also find attacking on ascending and descending altitudes works well too. Hit and run if you loose more planes than you shoot down on an attack then run like hell clicking and dragging your planes out to at least provide vision. If you can master these techniques your IJN fighters will rule the sky's.

Good read.

Finally one of the few people who also notices that SPEED is mostly what matters in fighter warfare.

Also drag and micromanage.
