I'm reading up on some KM tactics at school and I read a couple posts about Slingshotting. What is slingshotting and how may I perform this tactic?

Press Z and shoot to your target before you turn back then press C as you turn away to your target, sound easy? It takes practice to master tis. Or look at the video on you tube nf sling shot. Hope this help.

A slingshot is a maneuver in order to fire at an enemy target while being in their range for as little time as possible. Its often mentioned for KM because it generally works best when you outrange the enemy.

If you imagine 2 ships parallel to each other, but just out of range of each other. Your ship turns to move closer to the enemy, just as you are about to come into range, you turn back. Due to the turning circle, before your ships is actually facing the direction to move further away from the enemy it will become parrallel with the enemy again, hopefully in range, allowing you to fire, while moving back out of range immediately afterwards due to the turning back.

So simply, you turn to face the target, then turn back. As your ship follows the circle, you come in range, fire, and go back out of range. Move in, turn back, fire at parallel.

One you have fired and are out of range, if youre using a long ship like the H44 then youll probably want to turn back to parallel again as soon as possible so that shots do not hit your end, which may still be in range. Particularly harmful if the shot that hits you is a blockshot.

Also, slightly more difficult, if you chose your front and rear guns individually, you can fire your front guns on the way into the turn and fire your rear guns on the way out of the turn while they are closer to the target than they would have been when parallel to the target at the apex of the turn, if that makes sense. That is the only way to claim a range advantage from this maneuver, but requires alot more practise.

Step 3

Keep turning till your back guns are in range

Step 4

Press C and Fire when your tail is closest too enemy. Also turn back to enemy once youve

i usually folow up with x, rather than c

makes it easier aniticipate on sudden moves, and it works both ways ( z,x & c,x)

I've been trying the z c method, but my reaction time is keeping me from being effective. Im going to try the regular method for a while.

It just takes practise to get right, getting accustomed to it for each individual ships speed and turning circle too.

Keep your lines the same length as your range to help guage accuracy. And use the G key liberally, like in the .gif above, to keep track of your situation. You can also watch the ends of your lines to tell when your ship is parallel without checking your ship, though you may want to do so to avoid team damage if things are crowded.

Don't give up, the simplest way of explaining it is to sail toward then enemy, then turn back when you get in range, at some point during the turn your guns will align with your target (you will have to account for your shells hang time) and that is when you fire. Dont start out trying to bob and weave back and forth every few seconds to sling in for every reload and dodge every shot back. Just take it one shot at a time and (like you see in the gif) make liberal use of the G key. Move in, turn back, fire, wait it out, see where your shot goes, remain aware of everything. If your ship is long then youre best moving back out of range then straightening up quickly so you dont take an aft hit.

Some ships are better than others at slingshotting too, like almost all german ships, so you have to take that into account. But stuff like wether your target can outsling you is something you learn in time.
