Aircraft used to affect AAW defense, once upon a time. Dont think any ability ever affected sight range but I'm honestly not sure.
As Bong said in his first post, each type of aircraft has an associated stat that increases its attack against other aircraft, defense against other aircraft and defense against AAW. Doesnt affect sight range or ready time or fuel time.
Recon pilots use aircraft (Also called observer), Fighter pilots use fighter and Bomber pilots use bomber.
