  • New types of mines?

Hi all,

This is just a suggestion. If you think that it would upset game balance/be to hard to program or some other problem, just shoot it down, i don't really care. I just thought it would be useful to have a use for all the mines that people tend to complain about. I personally only have 700, so i don't really care all that much

But my idea is to make the mines have the ability not to be anchored to one spot. Give them the ability to drift north/south/east/west a bit. Not too far, but some movement so that mines are somewhat effective after you drop them.

There could definitely be some work put into mines. The drifting mines were suggested just a few threads down.

The magnets are just silly. There were magnetic detonation systems but having them drift towards ships, no.

You're right. That does make sense. I don't think they had that much. I just confused it with the magnetic detonating system. I took the suggestion a couple of threads down and refined it so it would be much more feasible. I think he was talking about how once you dropped it it could technically drift back into your lines if it went the wrong way. This way you could drop the mine into a hot spot of ships and have a better chance of hitting one than with just a stationary mine.

*I edited out the magnetic mine part out of the original post. Too futuristic for this game :P.

I think the alternative would be instead of mines, use sonar buoys, last about as long as smoke and cover about the same area. Vulnerable to damage, like a mine and visible. The question then is, can a torp destroy it or only shell from a gun?

Just means a sub would have to surface and use his deck gun to put it away. Gee, kinda creates an incentive to carry a gunner.

I would think the drifting mines would only be launched from the mine racks. Since they are "shot" out, I would think they could continue to drift in that direction. Kind of like really slow torpedoes, preventing them from drifting back to your lines.

That will perhaps encourage using mine racks since for now it is not tactically efficient to lay mines with them.

If the sonar buoys last as long as smoke, there would be no need to frantically destroy them. It would be the equivalent time frame of having a sonar DD in your vicinity and then you killing it.
