Where I live, there is a bicycle event called "Gran Fondo". It is billed as a "ride", however, the riders are timed.
Last year, a rider was knocked over by an aggressive rider trying to "race" to the finish. This "racer" caused an accident that sent someone to the hospital. The other person thought it was a ride and was in no way racing to the finish line. That rider went to the hospital injured because of the racer.
Another analogy might be softball or a pickup Basketball game. Do you play to win? Of course. Do you fall to the ground and cry like a baby if you don't win? Probably not. Did you have fun playing, even though you lost? Most definitely yes.
Either way, too much emphasis on either perspective causes problems. Zero competition is boring and too much competition isn't fun. Let's compete, let's have fun doing it.
