  • Destroyer Escort Pictures? **Look** (USS Slater DE 766)

Some of you may remember this thread...while others might not. Anyway I have created this thread to  share my picutres from my time volunteering at the USS Slater DE (Destroyer Escort) 766 in Albany, NY. The Slater is the only DE afloat in the Untied States out of 563 that where made durring the war.

The Stern 3" gun Being fired on Memorial Day 2012


DE Day - What DE day is along with the Firing of our stern 3" gun (Firing at 4:55 in)

On Septemer 17th 2011 they started up the #3 diesel 8 cylinder Ships service generaotr in B3; The Aft Engine room (For them starting it up a second time that day put it @ 2:07  -

Coast Guard Day Including a Breif Hitory of the Coast Guard & its role Durring WWII & Also included is the Firing of our stern 3" 50 Cal Gun for a three round Salute.

On this past monday, the 5th they recived landmark status - http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Slater-given-historic-landmark-status-3383384.php 

Now on to picutres from the times I have been onbaord since the last update of picutres!

December 10th - (You will also notice that the Slater is in its winter location located about 1 mile south of the normal location; It is in this location from start of December till the end of March)

Did not do much that day; picutres are of the start of a steel replacement project that the ship fitters worked on.

December 27th -
The start of the restoration on the Mess Deck






Chipped paint from tabble legs



December 30th did more needle gunning paint - So just a few picutres of the Winter Berth.





Jan 7th - Did various work on the Mess deck.







The Normal location.

Jan 16 - Did some grinding on ragged welds.



Also this happend to be Martin luther king jr day - So I did not have school.
This is a picture of our OLDEST ACTIVE volunteer who goes there every monday
He turned **NINETY** (90) on Jan 10th...He still dose welding ext.

Jan 25th - Did grinding on raged welds in a passageway on the main deck.

Qaz thats is some awesome pictures.

Really a wonderful ship.

Wish where I live in the world they would keep our old ships alive like HMS Victoria, HMS Odin and so on but sadly they did cost to much for the goverment to have them left during the 60-70th.

They can...Well sorta! The 20 & 40 mm's have been pluged so they are safe - Dont quote me on this but i think i remember hearing if the plugs are removed & some simple work is done to them then they can fire.

Also the 3" guns are not pluged & Gun # 2 & 3 have been fired...(well blanks!)

  Those are HHs, not a single weapon during WWII had the name PHH even since thats is a word from NF some means Premium Hedgehogs.

As it's seems thos are just replica of real Hedgehogs.
