wouldnt it be cool if fighter planes could straffe ships... small value hits...  .. would be great to fight small ships or to sink really damaged ones....

+1 if they fly at low altitude and AAW skill is 100% active and effective :P

statistically speaking, even if FPs could strafe ships, they wouldn't do much. Imagine how much a rain of .50 caliber lead, which is a soft metal, would do against several inches of steel and iron.
Absolutely nothing.
Imho, since it's a strafe run, and obviously there will be sailors on the decks of ships, that strafing FPs could kill sailors, and you would get points for killing officers or whatever of an enemy ship instead of only dishing out 1 damage per, with most shells bouncing on high tier ships. But that would make the game too complicated, and the skill of low level DDs and their sailors would be absolutely nerfed to hell by CVs doing strafing runs on them.

Also, strafe runs could be effective in knocking out a ship's auto AA, so a CV could send in a strafe run of FPs to soften up a ship's defenses before bombing it.

This idea has some potential, but I'm a little hesitant to recc.

Strafing really only worked effectively on unarmored, lightly covered ships such as Frigates, some old destroyers, smaller submarines and transport and fuel ships. 1930s and newer Destoyers, Cruisers, fleet submarines, Battleships and Carriers had no such problem as the lead would simply bounce off the steel plating and armor. Best it could do is kill a sailor on the deck (AAW) which are not controlled by a sailor atm, so nothing to an armored ship.

I would say it should  have the same value of the KM flack u ... ..  i mean .. if a an aa shell can sink a red ship, shouldnt fighter ammo be able to do the same thing...!!

.. there are dds and frigates in the game.. so figates dds and maybe cls with weak armor could be succeptable..   and then of course Larger ships that are already damaged in the red zone and not repairing...... the ones that can be sunk by aa rounds...

Fighter planes of World War 2, at least on the Allied side, were armed almost exclusively with .303 and/or .50 calibre machine guns.  Some British fighters, late-model Spitfires and Hawker Typhoons/Tempests etc., either supplemented these with or switched entirely to 20-30mm cannon (less accurate versus small fighter aircraft, but yielding far greater damage where employed against bombers and ground targets).  None of these weapons, however, had much if any effect versus warships - except in forcing exposed crew to take cover.  It was often the practice in anti-shipping and/or anti-submarine strikes for escorting fighters, thus, to strafe enemy ships just ahead of the bombers, forcing AA crews to hit the deck and thereby increasing the odds for the bombers.

The only possible uses I can find for this:

- Strafe CVs to destroy planes prepared but not launched

- Strafe APAs to destroy them

Both creates severe balance issues.
