  • AA for IJN

Does anyone have advice for some one looking to use his IJN DD/CL for fleet defense in GB and maybe to shoot down planes in blitz.  Would this be profitable? Useful? Fun?

It is difficult. IJN AA fires far, but has slow reload and doesn't hit real hard. Make sure you know your golden angle. I liked using the multi-purpose guns when playing this way -- they also carry HE shells, but the AA doesn't hit as hard.

Myoko and Mogami work well for AA boats for IJN, however you will need high level DP gunners (70/75+) as they are delay classed sailors. As a support ship they work quite well, the range of the AA makes it easier to keep from crowding the line and still being able to hit those ranged planes.

If IJN AA is difficult, what about UK and USN :O ?

Basically IJN has 3 guns i would consider useful for AA.

6.1" A - High range and high damage slow reload.
4.70" High range but meh damage medium reload.
3.60" Medium damage Low-Medium range good reload

The 6.1" goes on Agano/Mogami/Myoko While the rest can be used on DDs

And if you really want to AA but don't have the DP gunners yet (you really should late class them) for it then use 6.1" NLD guns. The range is still good and you can shoot at other ships as a bonus.

IJN AA is meant to be used with a lot of slots. Its why its considered mainly useless on the lower tier BBs,

However the sheer ammount of T slots Yammy and SY have makes them quite able to quickly rape squads of T4.

For AA platform purpose, the best in my opinion is the 6.1 A Mogami CA/CL or Myoko.

Problem is you only get access to those when you class your AA, normally at 80+.

Any IJN boat with 4.7" AA is an asset.

Only with properly leveled DP gunners or a good player. I've seen people try to use kongo with the 4.7s I laughed and cried.

Under 10 barrel (5 guns) I have to disagree with that.

Its going to snipe low level scout, and thats it. The only ship that can use them efficiently is the DD3, and by the time your gunner are classed its max displacement will be the main issue. So you'll fit a low level BO that you might have the gunners, the gun and not much more.

Pretty amazing AA ship tough. Small and fast enough to keep up and be a pain to shoot from long range. Ammo is an issue.

The T slots are also really far apart, so you'd have to cross your lines at the exact spot to hit a plane with more than 4 shells on lower tiers BB.

The asama while decent at it also suffer from that T-slot positionning issue, compared to the pensacola or the Moltke/Mandell
