If its about skill that needs some time to be developed one might prefer to learn to paint or to play a musical instrument. Real life is a slow process, in a computer game most people search for short time distraction from their everyday life, the big explosion right now. If they dont get what they want, why play.
I just realised that I am wasting my time debating this.
Gamers like games, and like being competitive at them.
If you're an artist, go paint wallpapers, see if I care. But I believe a game should encourage its players to enjoy the game, and offer decent competitive options to its playerbase, as well as means to acheive competitiveness. Especially a PvP-centered game.
