You are overlooking a key factor.
Would you think a patch announcing xp rate on regular server will double, vet rate will double from now on would help on the long term?
No.
Thats what event are becoming. Eventually, they won't matter, since they are pretty much everyday anyway! People won't bother getting back to the game for them.
You might as well announce that patch, complete with cost abolition for smokes and PHH. You know, so vet player also just leave the game seeing as every idiots and their moms would get BB6 in less than a month.
