Got hit by quite a few of them, no sailors died.
The effect is that anything directly hit by it takes a monstrous amount of damage. Oneshot BB5's certainly. The blast then hangs around for a while, and you take a stream of continuous damage while you're in it. The closer you are to the center, the more damage you take.
My SY was able to ignore about 4 of the things in a row that hit me in the outer edge of the blast, not taking a serious amount of damage. A near miss then nailed me.
