if your using auto FCS the shell is green for how far you can shoot and red if its beyond gun range. so move it around and see at what point it turns red. as has been pointed out if you click outside the range of the guns it stays at the last angle you used (does not move to max).

note that the guide lines are based on your BO not the gunners so the lines can be alot longer than the guns you have on the ship.

the 3" neut guns are really short range so the BO guide lines can out pace the range on the guns.

Problems:
1.) Its a DD, it doesn't shoot far
2.) 3" Guns don't shoot far...
3.) HHE has shorter range than other ammo types...
4.) Auto aims 1 angle lower most of the time.

Solutions:
1.) Use instead, Normal or Light HE
2.) Use Manual and hard learn it.
3.) Guns with Higher Muzzle velocity and shell weight tend to shoot farther.
4.) Manual aims where you want it if you know how to aim.

No I wasn't using HHE by the way. I just wanted fast firing guns, and 3 inch had the fastest reload I could get at the time.
