  • New Player Chat/Help channel

Hi all..

I'd like to suggest a Open help channel to be introduced to navyfield. A chat window that is open from the start of playing NF, and does not require a radioman to use. Also with a opt in/out option attached to the help tab at the top of the screen when in dock.

I think this will really help to introduce new players to navyfield, and also provides help for older players on certain subjects. This is more a player run help channel, but of course i also think it would be useful for moderators also to keep in touch with the community at times. I personally would be happy to use this channel to help out new players starting, as i am sure so would some others.

The last 2 weeks i have been helping out a few players in game, no names needed. 1 person is new to the game, i meet this player in a trade room, when they poped in to ask 1-2 questions, and it went from there, it turned out they were at lvl's 8-10 already ,and had already classed up half the new sailors into radiomen, i'm sure something we have all done at the start of playing this game :). After some time i managed to give some advise to the player, and am still helping them out. But this would not of happened if we had not met by chance in a trade room.
Also i have been helping out 2 older players with crew checks and advise. I certainly find that people enjoy there game more if they understand it better, by the end of 2 weeks of helping them, they now know a lot lot more about the game and there chosen nation etc. We also managed to buy sailors and fix there crews up much better,( a quick BIG Thankyou to a few older players that also helped us out this week, you know who you are). The result being, 2 players now with good crews, and they are much more enjoying there gaming experiance. I do feel perhaps there are more members that would enjoy some advise, or even to be in-channel just listening and learning.

I hope that this idea gets a lot of +1's because i really think it can help the community grow again.

I do not suggest this is a TeamNF run channel, but perhap not a bad idea. Also rules for channel will be needed and upheld, such as no trade spam, or no abussive(sp?) language or harrasment of players etc, all = channel ban, or perhaps more!. For spamming in channel, a system could be used were if a player uses less than 3 secs between messages, they get a auto spam lockout from channel,(not able to type again), for 30-60 secs. I've seen it used in other games and works well to stop some spammers.

I think a lot of players would use this channel and hopefully it is something worth looking into implementing.

one could argue TNF is supposed to serve this community not the other way around.

And I believe this suggestion really is onto something that would require little change to their function. Even better, rather than being whispered or having to wait 10 minutes in a "TNF help desk" room, they could now simply monitor that channel, along with more experienced players that can support them in their job.

Of course, there are problems, but I really think that TNF and vet players can make this work.

Hi all..

Cheers for all the constructive comments.

After some reading, i still feel it would be good as more a player run help channel than TNF in general, But i would certainly support it if TNF wanted to run it etc.
I still like the idea of a auto kick/ban system, such as -

Less than 3 secs between messages = 45sec lockout from chatting,but can still read.
Any swearing = all message blocked, not just the swear word, and perhaps 45sec lockout, but can still read.
On any 3rd lockout/offence = 30mins or 1hour lockout(Channel kick, no reading either), (should be long enough to calm people down, heheh).
Also a player vote system could be used for persistant abuses of this channel, were by-passes etc are being used = Possible command = /K(kick) "username" (this starts a channel player vote-15-20sec vote) - F1=yes/F2=no/F3=no comment. I guess a percentage(30%, or something) of the people in channel at that time needed for vote to succeed.
And last of all - The SDE petition system for heavy abuse of this channel = typical 1-7day ban etc.

Please add if i have missed anything. I think that covers most possible problem areas and reduces the need for a TNF member, of course TNF members could still have more powers introduced for them to run this channel, no question there, if they may decide to.But perhaps with the above suggestions they may only need there usual lines of contact with SDE to get things done if needed.

This sounds also a very good suggestion, and perhaps looks even easier to implement. My one problem, which i have started a thread about in suggestions here, is the purple color used for these channels i find hard to see sometimes, and often miss messages, i do have very good eye sight just to say :) . I did not want to link these 2 threads, but since the above suggestion, it now makes sense to bring into the discussion. Could i suggest here that a seperate chat window is needed to make use much easier. Again i'd suggest something very similar to chat panel like in battle waiting room, with approx 8-9 lines of chat being able to read. Situated(sp?) up top of the screen(not in battle), under help and rules tab, i think this will not block anything in use. I feel if the purple text had a plain colored background(chat box) it would be much easier to read and use, not transparent like battle waiting room.

Just had a thought - A opt in/out option is very much needed if anything is implemented for mostly obvious reasons. Perhaps a new TAB(Channels/Comms?) could be created, placed near/between the HELP/RULES tabs that is already there(top of screen), another drop-down tab(Channels) for simple turn on/off channels 01-Help/02-Trade/03-Recruitment(?), just like turning the sound on/off at present (tick on/off).

Yesterday some TNF members hosted a room where anyone could ask them anything, which would be a good step in the direction regarding a help channel. It showed that there is TNF members willing to sit down with the community and help taking time out of their playing, just think how much they can help if they had a help channel, Anyways +1 from me

Occasionally mods will open a "helpdesk" room in the battle area for players to ask questions. Some people have very valuable questions. Granted we do get our fair share of funny ones too....

And by the way, many thanks to all the players who are allways willed to answer all the questions
of the new and not so much experienced players!
This is what newbies keep on playing navyfield.
You are a nice contrast to all those idiots, which having fun in giving stupid answers to the newbies or fingerpoint on them for having useless setups or whatever.

Hi all..

I'd just like to add the idea of some criteria to be meet, in order for this to be useful/successful.

1 - It must be INSTANTLY visible and useable on log-in for new players.(no need for commands etc to start using)
2 - It must have rules of use - and some system to unhold the rules. (auto or Mod based, as suggested before).
3 - It must have a opt in/out option for all players.(New channels tab or attached to (F10) control panel.or similar)

I think #1 criteria is very very important for it to be a success as i hope it could be.The other 2 criteria are fairly obvious to why they are needed.
