and actually, although B-17 bombers WERE used in Midway, they DID NOT HIT A SINGLE DAMN THING!!!

Exactly. They had 2 sets of bombers going after the carriers 3 times. They also went after a supply convoy and BBs. At one point, they were flying so low the gunners were straffing the Hiryu with the belly guns and they still couldn't get a hit!

Bombers would be cool as a oneshot support power for the current flagship or something.

Other than that... no thanks.

Kinda of like some other games, where the "airpower" option becomes available, they fly over the map and hit, then leave. An interesting idea, but I'd have to chew on that before I bought off on it. Just brainstorming, if you win X number of games you then are rewarded with X amount of bombers.

Maybe make a map that has an island with an airfield in the center. The team that captures the island first (Hint: APA's would actually have a use outside of HA) would be able to coordinate and launch bombing runs with national bombers according to the ships that captured it. Like US and B-17's for example. Who would coordinate these runs should probably be the APA that cap'ed it. But that's up for debate. These bombers would fly at a set height above GA, although fighters can still travel up to engage them and aa guns can still reach them. They would have half the visibility of the scout and would not have to worry about fuel reserves. Since most land-based bombers could travel within the distance of the average map we use at least 10 times over. They get one bombing run then they have to return obviously. The amount the island can launch and the time it takes the aircraft to load would take some discussion. And other then the massive coding requirements it seems pretty solid.
