  • CV ALASKA! Also the 4 Nations CV/BB Hybrid Thread

    07. 10. 2009 19:47

Kapusta
Now if this topic has already been made, nothing came up in my searches, and I
searched every possibility for such a thing as I could, and all I could find was a
sentence about a CV owa hybrid, which would be a little above the tier I'm thinking
of here.

*Everyone* knows that the IJN has the CV Ise, a hybrid CV/BB, and possibly TW.
And for a long time, people have been wanting a CV like this for each nation,
especially since the recent temporary spikes in CV wars due to the July 4th event.
Now I know that several CV/BB hybrids have been suggested before, but I believe
that this would be the best option: the Alaska CV conversion remodel.

Now, for a little history, which I'm kind of unclear of myself. As I understand it, the
US sort of had a CV crisis after the Battle of the Coral Sea, what with the Lexy being
sunk and the Saratoga in for repairs, and not many Essexes being in commision, the
USN was looking for ships to convert. There was the Baltimore, Cleveland, Alaska,
among others. But the Alaska stood out because it was similar to the Essex in many
way, but blah blah blah, Cleveland got chosen instead -> Independence, and
Baltimore -> Saipan, which is not in the game, and I didn't find that in any searches
either.

While the Alaska was never actually turned into a CV, and only 2 were built
anyways, I think it'd be a good candidate because:

1. It's similar to the Essex.
2. It's currently very crappy.
3. It's a BB1, just like the Ise, so as not to make it overpowered.
4. It's crappy.
5. It's gigantic and could use some fixing, so why not turn it into a CV?
6. It's an underpowered BB, so it's crappy.
7. The taking off of 1 gun won't be too bad, not that its firepower was all that great
anyways.
8. It has low firepower:size ratio, making it crappy.
9. It might have actually existed, although probably not in the form I'm talking about,
being a flattop instead, but I like it more this way anyways, so too bad!
10. Did I mention that right now, it's crappy?

Now as mentioned before in the list, if it had actually undergone conversion, it would
probably have become a flattop. However, things didn't progress far enough for
plans to be drawn up, so I'm just gonna "assume" that it was gonna be a hybrid.
Since it is very large, it would make a better aircraft carrier than certain tiny
CVs that somehow serve as runways for giant cargo planes *cough*Oyodo*cough*.
And also, since it only has one rear gun, the removal of it would give it still 2/3 the
firepower, therfore not nerfing its firepower so much that it basically becomes a
normal CV, and it would certainly be fun(ner) to drive.

Allowing the Alaska to remodel into a US hyrid BB/CV would add another aspect to
US BB play,
and would also be quite amusing. It would turn the US's crappier BB1 into an
acceptable and perhaps enjoyable ship. And while it would require a CV crew, many
US BB beginners have already gone CV. And for those who haven't, it would
encourage them to try out a BB before getting too sunken into a BB. Besides, the
Ise did it! And as for a name, Alaska would work for me, but you'd need to use
another date or something. You could also use Hawaii, or the name of one of the
other 4 Alaskas.

So now, enjoy some pretty pictures and such:

A side by side comparison between my crude MS-Paint-skin-grafted CV Alaska model
and the current CB Alaska model:

And the CV Alaska stat board thingy:

Oh, and did I mention that this will decrapify the Alaska :)?

Now THAT is a pretty picture. I don't really like this thread because it is one of IJN's
advantages. Plus, shouldn't people be leveling supports instead of pilots for BB? The IJN
BB line at least CAN go to the CV line.

Well, I think of all nations, that KM should get a CV convert. Yet I did this just to get
my skills up for my big task, Making new things for Navy Field. I want new things in this
game for the Viarity of the task. I know that most will never be picked up, yet I still
want to show that It can be done, and Done Well.

"I know some people may argue that they are not historically accurate or never existed
beyond an idea or a drawing. Well, in reallity, neither did any of the KM CV's, all of
the BB5/6, H44, DDX, etc, etc."

My problem is not with ships that were planned but never built. In fact, I think including
such "nearly-were" ships is neat. My problem is with ships that are completely made up.

The KM CVs currently in game were all real in that they were at least considered. Seydlitz
is "Project Weser", a full deck conversion of the Admiral Hipper class cruiser Seydlitz.
Graf Zeppelin is fairly a well known 1935 design, and Graf Zeppelin II presumably
represents the newer design used when construction was resumed on the ship in 1942.
"Project I", the planned conversion of the liner Europa into an auxilliary carrier, is the
KM CV5 in game. "Project II", also an auxilliary carrier conversion, this time of the
French cruiser De Grasse, was way smaller than the CV6 De Grass we have in game now, so
that's kind of a stretch. Really I think the progression would make more sense as De
Grasse -> Seydlitz -> Graf Zeppelin -> Graf Zeppelin II -> Europa.

H44 was a pure paper project and was never intended to be built, but it was a real design.
The Montana, Lion II (Lion 1945), and Super Yamato (No. 798) were actual designs
considered seriously at one point.

There are a lot of ships that bear little relation to their historical counterparts (PCLs
and PCAs usually come up for this), but very few that were entirely made up. The DD
Tsukikei appears to be, as does the DD(X) Project. Queen Victoria, Kaiser and Nebraska all
are as well. And that's pretty much it.

I think it would be pretty cool if each nation had their own hybrid CV remods.

I know some people may argue that they are not historically accurate or never existed
beyond an idea or a drawing. Well, in reallity, neither did any of the KM CV's, all of
the BB5/6, H44, DDX, etc, etc.

I like the idea because it would add a little more variety to ship choices but I don't
agree with going up into Iowa/Yamato versions. Nothing bigger than BB1, maybe BB2 with a
slight nerf on gun space.

Now if you are lucky enough for SDE to actually implement them into the game I think there
would need to be a slight change to the way they are allowed into the game rooms.

Since they are not really a full CV or a full BB/CA/CL/whatever, they should not take up a
BB or CV slot in the game room. They should instead be given their own classification as
a CVE (Escort Carrier) or something. This include changing the existing Ise, Mogami, and
Oyo hybrids to fall within this classification. Like CV and BB, there should be a limit
to how many can be in a room. I'm thinking 2 maybe 3 per side would be good. This way
they would not screw up the CV or BB balance when the room splits and the game starts.

As for level - using the Alaska as an example, it remodels to Guam at lvl 59 which is just
an Alaska with a little more gun space and a fancy paint job. Keep the same Guam paint
job and remod Guam at level 70 to Alaska CVE. I know some people may say that level is
too high but it keeps it in line with the Ise CV (lvl 73) plus they will have the ability
to carry BB size guns as well as planes and they still have the option to continue on to
the next ship in the ship tree.

The Catapults are a good start, yet my main gripe with it is there. The Flightdeck is
still half way up the deck for not a reason.
The Ise cat on the first pic there dose not match up, and you are lacking shadows.
The rest is good.(I'm not a fan of the pointy boat bow yet it's your ship)
