Actually I know of at least one ship that was sunk by high altitude bombing. The IJN destroyer Mutsuki was conducting rescue operations off Guadalcanal when she was caught by a group of B-17s. Her captain knew how poor the aim of the B-17's usually was, so he arrogantly failed to even get under way. The result was a single bomb hit that sank his ship almost immediately. The embarrassed captain supposedly remarked that that was proof that everyone got lucky occasionally. Always that that was hilarious.

But yeah no B-17 flying off a carrier. Maybe B-25 instead ;)

Actually, no. It was Lancasters from 617 squadron (the Dam Busters) dropping Tallboy 12,000lb (5,443 kg) bombs that actually sunk the Tirpitz. 2 actually hit and a few others just grazed her. And as far as i know, there never was any 4 engine bomber capable of carrier operations.

The ship was parked in a harbor for months getting pounded. A ship in open water, underway is a different story. Battle of Midway, the jap carriers waited until they dropped their bombs, then moved out of the way.
