  • Best way to play low-level?

Just about level 20 now with my Soviet crew, and I'm still not sure how to be useful in the battles. Tried doing AA at first, but with only a few single-barrel guns even if I do hit a plane it will only damage it, not take it down.

Decided to try sub hunting, since that's ostensibly what destroyers are best at. Leveled up a sonar man and two 11-torpedo arm. sailors and sat out my restore sailor and AA sailors. I took some depth charges out and went hunting, but enemy subs never seem to get close enough that I can depth charge them without eating a few salvos from enemy BBs. I either become one of the first casualties or end up leeching XP while I scoot around hoping my sonar op will find an enemy sub behind our front-line ships. I feel bad for just keeping our flagship company, but there isn't much else I can do besides sink.

Any tips? Something I can do that's useful that doesn't involve sinking before I can at least get 500 XP?

Thanks for the caution, but I'm still using depth charges and developing a sincere hatred for hedgehogs. I've been sunk four times today by my own team using HHs on a sub that I located and moved in to kill.

To contrast, I've only been killed by subs once today, and I've only gotten one sub kill. That's four out of six encounters, death by friendly HH.

What ship do you have right now? For low level Soviets, I personally recommending blitz, as the soviets have quite a few powerful long ranged guns at blitz levels.

Here's another few alternatives: Avoid subs, and avoid using HH unless at long range, thus eliminating friendly fire. Also try AAing or something else to get attack and revert back to the first half of what I mentioned: avoid subs and avoid using HH, thus avoiding friendly fire.

SN doesn't get a "usable" AA gunset until lv 30, think OP said he was at lv 20 or so.

Actually yeah, I saw the link to that 10MB SN ship chart over in another thread. Saved a copy for myself.

To be honest with you guys, I gave up on my SN crew for now. My BO and gunners are level 27 and I took the Leningrad over the Tashkent for the extra T slots, but I found that I was doing better with the level 12 KM DD than any of the SN DDs, so I've been playing only KM since then and they've just reached level 27 too, with the Z99 and D40. Between how much easier I found KM to play, and the fact that I sort of started my SN crew wrong, I'm just going to stick with KM until I'm better established.

I do GB2s for fun and blitz's for points and credits.

I have a KM Z99 (DD3 I think) equipped for ASW and AAW and use it for GB2s. Now that I've got the KM dual 4.1"/65 SK C/33 guns, I can actually bring down a plane or two and that's pretty fun. It also gets me some CV attention, which is better than them bombing our BBs. ASW is good fun too, when I'm not being TK'd.

For blitzkriegs, my D40 has got six barrels of 5.9" and a few torpedoes. My gunners are awful, but I make a good shell sponge.

I appreciate all the advice, sorry if I make some of it irrelevant because I change things up a bit. I'm still learning and getting used to things.

ignore these dudes, just get prem run no armor and light guns with 1bind of ammo, almost str8 down to the tape then run it as fast as u can parallel with the tape start shooting anything in sight. it scouts for bbs, there bbs shoot at u and your team chances of winning go up. you will lvl pretty fast i reached from 1-30 in a night with my u.k crew the other day.

Howdy mate!

Playing a valuable dd player in GB Is a very difficult issue...as you are well realizing . I commend you for being a true Asw player with DC and not hh. Perhaps if you have them... Mines create a good shield for bbs from subs. However the can be easily shot ...

When you get higher lvl SN AA will be easier to use on t slots. I like the 2x 5.9s(or what were haven't checked SN guns since patch but the minis are good too.

Key is you live and win you get more exp... So stick back watch for subs or the opportune moment to move on the other teams cvs or AA boats

Running ASW is a unique talent. --- I'm not talking about some knucklehead who sprays hedghogs like a 2-year old holding the garden hose either.

Real ASW use Depth Charges.

I think NF should eliminate the regular HH and only offer PHH. That will get people to use DCs more and understand the unique challenges. If you are starting out in ASW, I recommend the neutral FF-Y, with mid and rear racks. Good speed and tight turning force. You can set the guns up for HE or AA and force the subs to dive just before you dump four barrels-o-hurt" on their heads. It has a tiny target area, but can't take a hit from a single torp (with or without bulge). From an SS perspective, DCs have some weaknesses however. Crash dive can usually be hit just prior to detonation, and surface effects of DCs are low. However, DC blast to a submerged sub is instant death.

QFTW - --- but lots of good stuff here. I would like to keep seeing some good ideas for low lvl ASW - maybe we can break into building a more effective low lvl team play game that doesnt become BB food in the first 3 min.

if you keep your head lower than your monitor... and you duck even lower when you see shells coming at you...less chances of getting hit.... its very important to keep your back arched so you dont strain your neck

stay in blitz til 60 -.-

by then you may have some speed and SD to withstand GB2's
