  • Past tense and future tense?

"What is the Newest nation to be added to the game?"

Does the above according to proper english rules mean that a new nation is to be added to the game?

If the question was like "What WAS the newest nation added to the game?" , then the answer would have been RM!

Someone please enlighten me.

this is what happens when writer (and also reader) are not as fluent as they think they are

there is also a vast differance between formal written english and common usage language
there are naunces and parse order for properly writing for educational and testing purposes
there is an art to properly wording quizzes and caveats for attempting to use trick questions
whoever is writting this doesn't have the formal backgorund nor edcuational training needed
to take into account that readers may not be skilled enough to work past the wording errors
and to take care not to provide answers where there may indeed be more than one that fits

i work in education .. specifically deafness .. where formal english often needs to be clarified

i would be happy to look whatever questions are left and properly frame them to reduce this

===What is the Newest nation to be added to the game?===

what is the newest nation to have been added to game ?

which was the latest nation to be added to game ?

which is the newest nation added into the game ?

which is the newest nation to have been added to game ?

which nation is the newest added in game ?

what is the nation most recently added to game ?
what was the nation most recently added to game ?

all same exact question ..

some read as easier to understand - some needing a bit of thought to parse out meaning
when fishing for a specific answer - writer gotta select the bait with care .. care semantics

BTW .. to enlighten op requested  ..

'is' ... is correct since RM IS still here .. its not a was and gone ... ( rm IS newest added )

*NOTE : ... the word 'addED' is past tense in itself ...
the suffix -ed means past action verb - unless modified or redirected

the verb 'be' or 'to be' .. is one of the most misunderstood verb conjct. forms in world
plus its many suffixes and prefixes

SDE needs new English teacher.

If they can't tell the difference between "to be added" and "which has been added".

yeah thats what i'm saying ..... readers skill level needs to be considered when mass writing
and errors on the writers side also become compound multipliers when not proofread carefully

who's reading ?
who's writing ?
whats the question?
whats the given answers ?
are they all 100% wrong - except the one 'correct' answer ??

gotta have some experience or knowledge to write for a group with mixed english skills
expecially if the point is to obtain a single correct answer on a list given as only answers

i'm sure everyone is learning from the quiz at least ..... just gotta read carefully and put yourself in the other guys head on the same page ... and screen alt answers accordingly .. remember these seas do have minefeilds (protect your FF's)

Well then they shouldn't have given one of the choices as "none of the above" - if you understand the words "to be added" then the answer is "none of the above".

Why should we get penalized for SDE's wrong english??

We all know RM was the last nation to be added!

"Is to be added" is a passive voice.  It is not past tense.  For example, it is the same as "what is to be done" or "what are you going to do," or in this case, what they are going to add.  The answer should be "none of the above" because all the nations listed already exist in the game.

This is common English and it is very clear that they made a mistake.  There should not be a debate at all.

Wow what is wrong with you all, the sentence is fine. The only argument I could make is if they were looking for the newest in age; us would win hands down as it is only 200 odd years old. That's pushing it.

I thought they meant which NEW nation is GOING to be in the game. So I answered none of the above.

Not the NEWEST nation that was ALREADY implemented in game. That would be Italy indeed.

Well since all of those are already in the game, it would be rather silly, wouldn't it? For once, it's your fault for having poor reading comprehension, not SDE's.
