  • Your thoughts on "Whale Wars"

Valefar
I recently argued with my GF concerning the tactics of the Sea Shepard crew of "Whale
Wars" on Animal Planet. Seeing as many of us are naval enthusiasts, I though I'd bring the
discussion here.

http://animal.discovery.com/tv/whale-wars/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_Wars

Synopsis: this series follows the crew of the Steve Irwin (SI), a ship who is crewed and
funded by the non-profit organization Sea Shepards. The SI (flying a Dutch flag)
interferes with Japanese boats off the coast of Antarctica as they harvest whales. The
Japanese maintain that they are researching sustainably whaling techniques, while the Sea
Shepards argue that it is in direct violation of International Law and barbaric.

I am pretty well-read concerning the international whaling laws, the Japanese research
efforts, the Sea Shepards' arguments against the Japanese, the history of Paul Watson (the
SI captain and Sea Shepard leader), but only have a limited knowledge of the show (I just
watched 3 episodes). The organization is based out of a town I used to live in, and I am
familiar with the political issues.

My questions are these:
-who do you support and why?
-is this show beneficial or detrimental to either organization involved?
-is there a better way to affect whale harvesting, regardless of motive?
-any other general thoughts by you?
-am I wasting my time here, and should I be paying attention to the conference call I am on?

I have my own opinions, and will state them once the thread gets going (I tried to be as
unbiased as possible in my descriptions). Since the original argument was with my GF, I
already started off as being wrong :P

emma, are you a veggie?

what is different between a cow having its throat cut for food and a whale being
impaled?

what is the difference between hunting 'game' and whales?

Modernization does not lead to more civilized behavior, in fact it simply allows for more
efficient and so called "civilized" killings, when really there is no such thing as a
"civilized" death

@mysharona

And if you or your family members ever have a knife stuck in your bodies, and need a
ride to the hospital, I'd just smile and walk away. After all, the world has 6 billion
people. A few dead ones don't matter. You're insignificant.

Thanks for reinforcing a notion I've always believed in. That some human beings are
of a lower grade than the very animals they look down on.

whats so special about whales?

they taste nice, whale soup nice just as beef is. nobody moans about the killing of
cows etc

fish die in a horrible way compared to other animals we eat. i dont care, nobody else
does, theyre only fish. whales are the same, mammals, but big fish basically.
humans are the dominant species, its our right.

and whales are ugly, taste nice, and can feed loads of people

@hachioji

Perhaps you would like to look up the definition of the word "spam".

I am presenting my side of the argument, backed up with my reasoning and such.
Just because my line of thought doesn't agree with yours, it does not make it spam.
Try get that into your thick skull.

If I follow your logic, then since your views don't agree with mine, by default it is all
spam too.

@js23

Well, I believe that when a person intentionally causes harm to another, then we do
not need to spare him any decency. For he never showed the same consideration
for this victim.

those whales take ages to die, its like killing a cow by stabbing him to death with a 3
inch knife

And to say they are doing research, thats bullshit and everyone knows it, they cut
the whale up when its on the harvesting ship, and all its inards are dumped into the
ocean ... how the fuck is that research ?

The main problem is that they are gonna keep killing whales untill every whale
species is endangered ... then what ? what if those endangered species cant recover
and their numbers fall untill they are almost extinct ... whos gonna fork the bill to
save them ? ... it wont be anyone from japan thats for sure.

also its still not known what impact it will have ... im sure one day we will know just
what damage the japanese have done

While the whale hunting by the Japanese is an act of crime against nature, we should not
poke fun at the japanese and mix this with the recent earthquake. I am glad nobody here
has done so, but we need to put this warning out incase.

Also, Mentioning Japanese has nothing to do with racism, if it were any other country it
would be the same reaction by people around the world.

I intend to keep this topic open for discussion; if there is any bashing please send me a
PM and i will have it cleaned up.

Share your thoughts on shooting people in PM's; I'd like a thread about the topic, the
laws involved, the organization, and their tactics that doesn't get locked for a change.

Thanks sweeties :)

Humans killing humans for sport, uhhh dosent any body see something wrong here, I
mean if some body murders a pregnagnt women like some nut did near where i live,
then I belive he deservers the death penalty. But shooting him for sport, kind of
barbaric. But back to the whales, I think they should be protected and the japaneese
are wrong to so but that does not mean they should be killed, its just in there culture
we did it back in the 1800's, so it going to be hard for them to change.
