HH need to change. Just a minor change - maybe a new paint job.
As an SS player they are a medium-threat weapon. I have defensive counter-measures at my disposal, but cannot employ them all the time and get clobbered. Since I can't determine whether the HH is a PHH, it really doesn't matter. As for their explosive content underwater, they are a lot less than depth charges, but if closely clustered work a lot better. From the SS perspective, they are a lazy solution to ASW.
As a CV player, I use them regularly to defend myself. I consider a sub the most significant threat to a CV. As for enemy BBs, once you are in their range...game over. There is little to defend yourself from an approaching BB while in a CV, not when 11-plane torpedo bomber squadron barely dents a bulged up BB5. However, the SS is a feared enemy ship and commands respect by CV players.
As a BB player, I can easily hunt and destroy enemy subs at will, with armor and impunity, aided with speed and one-shot obliteration capability. My reload gunner sitting in a rear slot can pump a 3-set of HH on gradual every few seconds, terrorizing any SS. Tactical playing style is the best defense. Knowing where the enemy is, regardless of whether you can see them is the secret. What I can't understand is why anyone in a BB would be afraid of a sub. They are slow and if you just stay out of their torpedo range, they can't get you. With the current setup, SS just run out of air in a couple of minutes and ...KABOOM. SS gone. If you want to get rid of him earlier, then just pound him with HH. Most SS are gone from the game in less than 5 minutes.
I am not against HH or PHH in general. I think this game needs an ASW weapon for the big ships, albeit difficult without a sonar-equipped escort nearby. However, the impact on surface ships is equivalent to a cluster bomb of tremendous power and has the range of 40 degree 6" guns and that needs prompt attention.
